Spring 2018
This term, the children will find out about all the different aspects of Italy. They will begin by learning where Italy is in the world, and then discover the physical geography of the country, with a focus on one of Italy’s active volcanoes, Mount Vesuvius, its other volcanic areas and location of the tectonic plates
English
In English, Class 4 have been reading a narrative called ‘Escape from Pompeii’ which relates to our Italy and Volcano topic. We have enjoyed reading about the friendship between Tranio and Livia, two young children who lived in Pompeii. As the story progresses, Tranio notices that something isn’t right as the earth tremors however, everyone else ignores the tremors as they think it is normal, until the mighty Mount Vesuvius erupts!
The children have spent the last few weeks investigating the language used within the text such as adjectives, adverbs, verbs and fronted adverbials and are now using all of these skills to create their own version of ‘Escape to Pompeii’. Please take a moment to read some of our stories.
We also enjoyed making our own volcanoes and had great fun watching our class volcano erupt.
Autumn 2017
Hello and welcome to Class 4. We are a mixed aged class of Year 4 and Year 5 pupils.
This term we will be learning all about the Ancient Greek civilisation. The children will be investigating what daily life would have been like for the Ancient Greeks, finding out about where they lived, what they ate and the kinds of jobs they would have done. They will also look at Greek culture and mythology, learning about the different Greek Gods and the importance of the theatre in Ancient Greek society. In English, the children will be studying Greek mythology and creating a mythical creature in order to write their own Greek myth.
Educational Visit
As part of our learning about the Greeks, we visited the Palace Green Library Museum in Durham where the children took part in various workshops. As well as learning lots of facts about the Greeks, they also had great fun handling some real and replica Greek artefacts and they even made their own votive offerings from clay.
FISCH
The children have had lots of fun playing games and increasing their awareness of leading healthy lifestyles.
Greek Pottery
This term we have been learning all about the Ancient Greeks. As part of our learning we learnt about Greek pottery and then used different techniques to make our own clay pots.

Summer 2017
Educational Visit to Bede’s World
This week, Class 4 went on an educational visit to Bede’s World to learn all about what life would have been like in Anglo Saxon Britain. As part of their visit, the children enjoyed exploring the farm and learning about why farming was so important in daily Anglo-Saxon life. The children also had the opportunity to visit the village and see the houses and hall. They particularly enjoyed listening to a story about Beowulf and sharing some riddles around a real fire in the village hall. The children also learnt about the Anglo Saxon soldiers, their weapons and what they would have worn to protect themselves in battle. Please take a look at some of our photographs below.
Spring 2017
This term Class 4 will have lots of fun as they become experts on the Earth, Sun and Moon as well as forces in action. The children will learn about the effects of gravity, friction, air and water resistance. These science topics will be inspiring both our art and D.T. topics as we will be considering how we get into space and gravity. We will explore how space rockets work and evaluate their shape, design and purpose before designing and constructing our own space rockets.
Big Spring Clean 2017
On Monday 27th March, the children and staff in Class 4 took part in Durham County’s Big Spring Clean. The children wanted to help improve their local are by doing a litter pick in Nettlewood which is a small wooded area next to our school. They worked really hard and collected lots and lots of rubbish.
Tim Peake Badges
This term we have been learning all about space so it was a wonderful surprise when One of our school governors, Janine Watson, brought in a modern treasure for us to look at. She won a competition via Twitter ‘Space Rocks’ where she answered questions set by Tim Peake. The prize was one of Tim Peake’s space mission patches which had travelled with him during his time in space. It was a real privilege for us to touch something that had once been in space.
Autumn 2016
It is a very important year in Class 4 as some of our children will be preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. This is an inclusive programme and all children enjoy learning and taking part in the activities together as part of their R.E. lessons.

Roman Shields
We started off our topic on the Ancient Romans, by learning all about why the Romans invaded Britain and then went onto learn all about the Roman Soldiers and the Roman Army.
As part of our Roman topic, we have been busy making Roman shields! Firstly, we researched what Roman shields looked like and how they were made and used. Then we completed three designs in our books before choosing our favourite to make. Finally, we drew our designs onto large pieces of cardboard and then painted them. They look great and Class 4 are now ready for a Roman battle!!
This week Class 4 put their Roman shields to use and pretended to be Legion 4 of the Roman Army. We used our shields to make the TESTUDO or ‘tortoise’ formation. The Romans used this to protect them from spears and arrows.
Dream Jars
This term in English we will be celebrating the work of the famous children’s author Roald Dahl and we are reading the BFG as our class novel. We made some dream jars to add to the BFG’s collection. Please click on each one to take a closer look.
Roald Dahl Biographies
As part of our Author Study on Roald Dahl we did lots of research about this famous author and learnt lots about his life. In our English lessons we were learning how to write biographies and therefore focussed our writing on Roald Dahl biographies. Please click on the images below to take a closer look.
