Hello and welcome to Class 2
We are a mixed age class of Year 2 and Year 3 pupils. Our class is full of fun and laughter and we aim to educate your children while making memories which last a lifetime!
Spring Term 2018
Year 2 have been focusing on shape in our maths lessons. We have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes and exploring their properties. We learnt new vocabulary such as vertices, faces and edges. We made our own 3D shapes using straws and bluetac to help us fully understand the properties of each shape. We worked hard together to problem solve and to encourage us to build resilience.
In our computing sessions we have been practising using the keyboard and becoming familiar with the letters/keys. We learnt that we have to use two hands to type on the keyboard and we played games to support us in this.
Winter Fun
What do you do when the snow falls and covers the ground? You grab your hat, coat and wellies and you have fun! The snow creates lots of learning opportunities for our children. Class 2 will look at seasonal changes across the year. We talked about the temperature (Brrrrr) and the key changes from the Autumn term. The children noticed that there were no leaves on the trees and the key weather changes. We had so much fun building snowmen and throwing snowballs!
Autumn Term
This term we will be learning all about the place that we live and carrying out some local fieldwork. We will be creating maps and investigating the area that we live in as well as looking at the United Kingdom, its capital cities and the seas that surround it. As the festive period approaches, we will be looking at ‘Christmas in the past’, and comparing the decorations, toys and traditions to what we celebrate today. In our English lessons, we will focus on our handwriting and basic writing skills.
Educational Visit
Class 1 and Class 2 visited Beamish Museum so we could experience ‘Christmas in the past’ first hand. During our trip, we were looking at the similarities and differences of how Christmas is celebrated today compared to many years ago. Before we went on our trip, we spoke to our family and friends and asked how they celebrated Christmas in the ‘olden days’. We were very surprised to see that most people only got one gift and this was often a piece of coal!
Whilst at Beamish Museum we saw that Christmas trees were decorated very differently to ours today! They were decorated with cinnamon sticks, candles, and orange slices! There were no baubles in sight! We also saw wreaths made from berries, holly leaves, cinnamon sticks and orange slices. These were hung on the railings in the streets and on some front doors. The children recognised that we still hang wreaths on our doors however, they tend to be artificial. As part of our workshop we went into a house and had a ‘pretend’ Christmas day. We all made peg dolls (a doll made from pegs and fabric which children would have to play with), cinnamon biscuits (a treat which would traditionally be eaten on Christmas day) and played traditional games. We noticed many differences from the past and the children recognised how fortunate they are today! As we returned to school we made our very own decorations for our classroom (streamers) and made some delicious cinnamon biscuits!
The aliens have landed!!
In class 2 the aliens have landed!! The children came into our class to find an alien crash landing!! There were 23 small creatures which have called our classroom their home. The children decided to call these creatures, ‘quiet critters’. We each used our phonics to give our aliens names, some examples were: bozz, chirl, cheff and fizz! We also wrote our own set of instructions about ‘How to care for quiet critters’. We noticed that they had been collecting materials to fix their spaceship and they sadly left us just before Christmas.
